Coming to America was in the heart of young Vincent D'Ambrosio. In 1931, Vincent had to commit his entire heart, mind and soul to this adventure of a lifetime. Growing up in the Abbruzzese region of Italy, he was trained to work hard, to be honest in his endeavors and to be a giver in life. At only 19 years old and armed only with a dream, a vision and a prayer; Vincent arrived in Philadelphia to make his mark on the world.

After a few short years of working for another bakery, Vincent decided it was time to start his own business.  In 1939, the family savings bought a small brick oven, a dough mixer and the first ingredients. With his two sisters working at his side; the basement of the family home, at 9^th and Christian Streets, became D'Ambrosio's first bakery in America. They baked all night and delivered their fresh loaves of bread to grocery stores in their car the next day.  The “good news of the good bread” spread quickly through town and as you would expect, Vincent quickly out grew these humble beginnings.

In 1943, Vincent moved to a place of his own, a three story row home in South Philadelphia; at 22^nd and Watkins Streets. Within 7-years he purchased the two homes next door, added pastries to his offerings and opened a retail bakery shop. By now, the D'Ambrosio name was getting famous in Philadelphia. If you wanted the finest breads and pasties; you had to go to D'Ambrosio.  Within another 10-years (1960's) the reputation and business had grown so much; it was time to bring Vincent's two sons, Christopher and Vincent, Jr., into the family business. Thirty-four (34) years in the same location and more business than they could handle was a sign that it was time to move again.
